The design decision

Release copper artwork, drill data and a drawing that explains the construction. A file set without via spans can be ambiguous even if every layer is present.

What to consider

Include the outline, layer order, materials, copper, thickness and tolerances, hole sizes and spans, filling requirements, surface finish and impedance targets. Add inspection or qualification requirements where required by the project. Use a consistent revision across files and identify any requested alternatives.

A practical review example

Create a release manifest listing each file, its function and revision. Have a reviewer reconcile the drill table against the stackup and check that top/bottom naming is consistent across all exports.

Checks before release

  1. Include a layer-to-file map.
  2. Separate plated, nonplated and laser drill data.
  3. Provide a contact for engineering questions and an exception approval process.

Connect this decision to fabrication

Use the design checklist to organize the initial discussion. Keep proposed values separate from the approved drawing and document the effect of any change on the rest of the construction.

  • Use rules confirmed for the chosen factory and construction.
  • Inspect return paths through every critical breakout.
  • Release consistent artwork, drills, stackup and drawing revisions.
This guide supports early design review. Device requirements, the applicable project specification and the fabricator-approved construction govern the released board.
