The design decision

A capture or target land must accommodate the intended hole, registration variation and the required copper connection. Reducing it changes both escape capacity and process margin.

What to consider

Use construction-specific fabrication data to select lands. The outer opening, bottom contact and layer alignment are not interchangeable dimensions. Fine-pitch escape should be checked with the finished land geometry and trace clearance, including local manufacturing tolerances.

A practical review example

If a land is enlarged to improve registration margin, repeat the BGA channel check. A small change can eliminate a route between neighboring pads even though the via itself becomes easier to manufacture.

Checks before release

  1. Obtain minimum land and registration values together.
  2. Inspect neck-down traces and plane connections.
  3. Confirm the dimension conventions on the fabrication drawing.

Connect this decision to fabrication

Use the design checklist to organize the initial discussion. Keep proposed values separate from the approved drawing and document the effect of any change on the rest of the construction.

  • Record depth and diameter using the same units and measurement convention.
  • Check capture lands, target lands and registration together.
  • Match the test coupon to the actual interconnect construction.
This guide supports early design review. Device requirements, the applicable project specification and the fabricator-approved construction govern the released board.
