Mechanical symmetry involves dielectric, copper and pattern distribution. Matching the number of layers above and below the center is only the starting point.
What to consider
Large copper pours on one side and sparse routing on the other can create an unbalanced construction even if the layer names look symmetric. Discuss resin flow, finished copper and local pattern balance with the fabricator. A compensation change must not compromise electrical clearances or impedance.
A practical review example
Place mirrored layers side by side during review. Compare copper coverage around large BGAs, power regions and panel edges, then ask the factory whether balancing features are appropriate.
Checks before release
- Match material families and thicknesses across the center where feasible.
- Review local as well as overall copper density.
- Verify panel and finished-board flatness requirements.
Connect this decision to fabrication
Use the stackup planner to organize the initial discussion. Keep proposed values separate from the approved drawing and document the effect of any change on the rest of the construction.
- Give every signal layer a defined return-path strategy.
- Review material and copper balance about the board center.
- Specify every via span and the factory-approved lamination sequence.
